Field Programs Fall 2011
Cedro Trails
As an organization, we always seek to establish new partnerships and create new programs. In the spring of 2011, we had an exciting opportunity to work with a new partner, the New Mexico Off Highway Vehicle Association (NMOHVA).
La Jara Collaborative Forest Restoration Project (CFRP)
Funded through a unique grant opportunity with the US Forest Service, this Collaborative Forestry Restoration Project (CFRP) is helping to reduce the risk of catastrophic wild fire in Taos’ La Jara Canyon.
Santa Fe National Forest Fire Rehab
Survival vs. Perseverance. Survival is born of necessity while perseverance
is an ethic developed in the face of adversity. The difference became definitively clear to the RMYC Blue Crew # 1 on their backcountry spikes
in the Santa Fe National Forest.
Bandelier Fire Rehab
The Las Conchas Fire that burned through Bandelier National Monument in June of 2011 and the subsequent flooding of the ancient canyons dramatically altered the park and forced NPS to close their doors for three months.
Wagon Mound Weatherization
Part of Rocky Mountain Youth Corps’ mission is to “inspire young people to make a difference in themselves and their communities.” We had a wonderful opportunity in Wagon Mound, NM in the spring of 2011 to directly put that mission into action.
Youth Conservation Corps (YCC)
With the support of numerous partners, community members,
and friends, this year’s summer crews ended with many high notes.
We offered several firsts this season for our Corpsmembers:
first job, first time working on trails, first time building a resume,
and first time working with adobe.
Santa Fe National Forest
Crosscut saw use is known to many as a dying art. To Rocky Mountain
Youth Corps’ Fall Crew, crosscuts were an essential tool. With projects
in wilderness areas far off the beaten path, the crew learned to make
saws sing.
Education Programs Fall 2011
After School Program
After-school hours are a critical time for youth. Research indicates that risky behavior increases during that time period without adequate supervision in a positive, structured and engaging environment.
Ranchos Elementary School
Ranchos Elementary students are learning about their cultural heritage thanks to the Taos Archeological Society.
Enos Garcia Elementary School
Enos Garcia Elementary students are experimenting with liquids and solids, making bottle tornadoes and learning about the color palette.
Questa Alta Vista Elementary School
Questa’s Alta Vista Elementary students meet at the village community center with access to a public library and playground.
Community Health Crew (CHC)
These six AmeriCorps members have a strong interest in healthcare and a desire to help their community.
